The Role
CEA are providing support to Great British Energy Nuclear (GBE-N), EDF, Sizewell C and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) through current contracts and as consortia members to various frameworks.
As the UK nuclear sector continues to evolve, we are ambitious about strengthening our presence across the industry, particularly within new nuclear programmes, including Small Modular Reactor (SMR) and Advanced Modular Reactor (AMR) developments.
We see significant opportunities to bring together CEA’s wider environmental expertise, including Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA) (including compensation) to support nuclear operators, regulators and government in delivering complex projects and policy objectives.

Accountabilities
The Technical Director works alongside the Director of Nuclear to develop and progress CEA’s presence in the nuclear industry through technical work and business development activities, in addition to growing the team. This includes (but is not limited to) the following:
Strategy
- Contribute and lead the development of the strategic approach to nuclear delivery and business development, working in close alignment with the CEA Leadership Team and specifically the Director of Nuclear.
Technical delivery
- Develop CEA’s service offerings in nuclear in relation to environmental compliance and permitting, nuclear site licence compliance and consenting services, including site selection and feasibility, EIA, HRA and consenting, construction environmental management, radioactive and non-radioactive waste management, EIADR and related disciplines.
- Lead technical work on projects, including the provision of technical and strategic advice and the authoring of technical reports, facilitation of workshops, and delivery of training to a high standard.
- Support the delivery of technical and project management services in the nuclear sector and develop diverse expertise that can be transferred across the business.
- Perform peer review of documentation, including Intelligent Client reviews of third-party deliverables, ensuring quality and consistency to CEA’s expected standards.
Business development
- Develop a portfolio of projects and contacts by undertaking a range of business development activities, including correspondence and face-to-face meetings with key contacts, and attendance at relevant conferences and other events.
- Identify and develop leads and opportunities to secure projects (specifically with SMR / AMR vendors / operators), including the identification of new opportunities and the drafting of bids and proposals.
Commercial performance
- Responsible for ensuring financial and commercial performance in effective project delivery, including the monitoring of project budgets, margins and delivery timescales.
People and team
- Grow and lead technical teams to support the growth of CEA in nuclear, including the recruitment, development and mentoring of team members.
- Line Management of members of the team (we utilise matrix management to get the best out of our staff).
Knowledge and Skills
The individual must be able to demonstrate the following:
Essential
- Considerable civil nuclear experience providing strategic/ technical advice
- Legislative, regulatory and policy knowledge in respect to Environmental Permit and Nuclear Site Licence compliance
- Considerable experience of leading successful nuclear tenders
- Established relationships with clients and other nuclear consultancies
Qualifications
Essential
- Relevant degree, individuals with equivalent professional qualifications and experience shall be considered.
Desirable
- Professional standing in nuclear – Chartered, Member/Fellow of Nuclear Institute/Society of Radiological Protection
